Published in November 2010, ‘QIPP national work stream: Back office efficiency and management optimization’ cites annual spend across the NHS on back office services (HR, finance, payroll, IM&T, procurement, estates management, governance and risk) to be £2.82 billion. As of late 2010 only £370 million (13%) of back office spend was based upon a shared service approach. Amongst those that have adopted a shared service or outsourced approach most frequently this is for provision of IT (38%) and finance (21%).
